Deputy Editor in Chief

The deputy editor in chief provides support to the editor in chief on editorial decision-making, and is responsible for editorial-decisions when the editor in chief is unavailable or has declared a conflict of interest. 

Zemin Zhang, PhD

Professor Zhang is Principal Scientist, at the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Genentech, South San Francisco, California, USA.  Professor Zhang is also an investigator at BIOPIC and the Center For Life Sciences of Peking and Tsinghua Universities. Dr Zhang obtained his BS from Nankai University in 1988, Ph.D. from Penn State University in 1995 and postdoctoral training at UCSF until 1998. From 1998 to 2014 Dr Zhang led a cancer genomics and bioinformatics group at Genentech to discover anticancer targets and biomarkers using cutting technologies such as high throughput sequencing.

He published many key papers in cancer genomics and informatics and is also an inventor for 60 issued US patents, directly contributing to the finding of the molecular targets of multiple cancer therapeutic agents currently in the clinical trial stages. His laboratory in Peking University aims to discover anti-cancer opportunities by exploring the vast TCGA/ICGC data, illustrate drug-genome interactions using the cell line system, and understand the interplay between immune and cancer cells using single cell analysis. He is a recipient of the 1000 Talents program in China and is also a Cheung Kong Scholar.
