Dr. Douglas MacPherson is an executive of Migration Health Consultants Inc. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Previously, he was Senior Medical Advisor to the Director-General of the Medical Services branch of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Before that, he was Director of the Office for Public Health Security in the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, at Health Canada. He was also Chief of Quarantine, Travel and Migration Health in that office. He serves as an advisor to many national and international agencies and governmental departments.
Dr MacPherson is an MD with Fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine and Medical Microbiology. He also holds a MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Disease at the University of London. He studied at the Insituto del Medicina Tropicale in Peru and at the British Medical Research Laboratories in The Gambia. He has been Director of both the Travel and International Health Clinic, and the Infectious and Tropical Disease Clinic at McMaster University while he was Head of the Regional Parasitology Laboratory at St Josephs Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario. Dr MacPherson has taught extensively at the undergraduate level and has coordinated post-graduate training as well.
Dr MacPherson has co-authored the first textbook on population mobility and health; “Migration Medicine and Health: Principles and practices”, and contributed to over 70 books. He has published over 100 articles and abstracts and presented at over 80 meetings and conferences. Dr MacPherson has been a consultant and reviewer for numerous committees, journals and groups, and has been an executive member on many occasions.
The Role of the Editor in Chief
The editor in chief is responsible for editorial decision-making on papers submitted to the journal. The editor in chief is also responsible for editorial matters that include but are not limited to journal supplements, the journal's aims and scope, the editorial board and volunteer peer reviewer pool, editorial assessment of video abstracts, assignment to published papers of endorsements, and for consulting on pre-submission inquiries from authors.
