Abstract

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a long-acting, reversible progestin-only contraceptive method that is administered either intramuscularly or subcutaneously every 12 weeks. Because of its high efficacy, ease of use, privacy, and non-contraceptive benefits, adolescent and adult women are increasingly utilizing DMPA as their contraceptive method of choice. Though there are very few contraindications for use, the method has several side effects that should be discussed with patients before initiation to enhance satisfaction with and maintenance of the method.
