Scientific and medical publishing is a complex business. The processes we follow are more sophisticated than many other businesses and we have important enduring ethical and legal obligations to authors, readers, and editorial contributors throughout the world.
Ensuring that these are met is a key part of my role as CEO. In pursuit of this goal I take many steps. Our bespoke editorial/production system is a significant element. Another part is our mission statement, which is very important to ensure that staff is aware of our obligations to readers, authors, and editorial contributors.
In my second From the CEO blog post I share with you Libertas' mission statement. I discuss it regularly in staff meetings and a large poster version is displayed in our office. I also discuss it in-depth with new staff members.
Why is our mission statement so important? Because it outlines our obligations to readers, authors and editorial contributors and articulates the most important ways that we can ensure these obligations are met on a daily basis.
A full version of our mission statement is available for download here. Some of the most important elements:
We define our customers as our authors, readers, and editorial contributors. Our customers are not narrowly defined as only authors who pay an APF: the definition extends to include authors who receive fee waivers, readers and editorial contributors. These groups have different expectations of how we will serve them.
We recognize that our customers expect fast, efficient service without reductions in quality, ethics or standards of communication. Where possible we aim to anticipate our customers' needs rather than reacting to them.
All submissions are subject to blind, independent peer review by two to three expert peer reviewers and editorial decisions made by the journal's associate editor or editor in chief. Editorial decisions are only made by these individuals: never by Libertas.
We enforce ethical standards around plagiarism, disclosure of competing interests, human and animal study participants, written consent to publication by identifiable individuals.
We are open and honest about article processing fees. All authors are informed of them during the submission process, as well as at earlier pre-submission manuscript preparation.

Published During AugustI have had the honor to work with the professional team at Bioinformatics and Biology Insights. The reviewers' recommendations were very interesting and I am satisfied of the article quality. I encourage scientists to submit their work to Libertas Academica.
